30-Jul-07:
Marshall set for British Open
Former
World No.2 Peter Marshall has announced that he will be
competing in the Dunlop British Open - Manchester 2007 squash
championships to be held at the National Squash Centre in
Manchester, England from the 20th to 24th September.
Marshall, who became England's most successful squash player in
the early nineties, has confirmed that he will be competing in
the Over 35 competition at the world's most prestigious and
largest combined men's and women's squash championships.
It was after competing in the final of the British Open in March
1995 that the three-time British National Champion withdrew from
the sport, suffering with chronic fatigue.
The former World No.2 made a brief comeback in April 1997, going
on to reach the semi-finals of the World Open seven months later
and after a further layoff, returned in 1999 to secure the
Pakistan Open title as a qualifier before capturing his third
British National title in February 2000.
Marshall's
unexpected entry will undoubtedly prove a major attraction for
the sport's longest standing event and complements perfectly the
championships unrivalled men's and women's fields headed by the
respective World No.1's Amr Shabana and Nicol David.
"Peter's entry is a major boost for this years Dunlop British
Open," said Tournament Promoter Paul Walters of
internationalSPORTgroup.
"Everyone knows how much Peter wanted to win the British Open
title, and of his enforced absence from the game following his
1995 final against Jansher Khan, so it will be fantastic to see
him competing again, against a very strong O35 entry."
